Deer and Coyotes
Nov. 11th, ’09-We’ve been seeing deer moving while we travel the roads of Buffalo and Trempealeu Counties on the vet route. Tom has seen too many deer on the late night and early morning calls that pass in front of the vet van. In general, farmers have been relaying to us, the deer are not moving because of the warm weather and unusual amount of corn still standing in fields for Mid-Nov. The Shack customers have brought to our attention that in the Blair area, they see slicked out does with no fawns. That caused us to ponder that notion and Tom and I have the regular deer herd we see and there’s been no fawns with the does either. Over by Waumandee, we took a survey of our vetworld clients. They all have seen fawns with the does. One farmer and his family surprised us and said this year they see only one set of triplets instead of usual two this year. We’re curious what you have been observing with the deer situation. The Blair, WI people wondered about the coyotes getting the young fawns. We’ve heard coyotes last time about 3 weeks ago. The farmer friends off vet route had heard many coyotes 2 weeks ago and now see less the last week.
Larry Jungwirth-the insurance and now coyote catcher- guy filled in the details for his busy week. For his coyote traps he uses Northwood #2 single coiled and uses Hiawatha Predator bait from Tim Cavin and Mark June’s Gusto. He caught 3 more coyotes-baits were all mixed up with Cavin’s and Mark June’s Gusto. He caught 3 large male coyotes! Larry says the coyotes are a humdinger to catch. Larry apparently is very lucky and great with setting for them. He catches many! He clued us in that they say-catch the alpha male then you will get the rest. Sometimes after they see the alpha male caught, the others stay away for a few days. Thanks Larry for your expertise and continued success with your trapping!!
