Warm temps and clear moon-lit nights have slowed down the movement of the animals. We&#8217;ve initially ended up with 25 muskrats, mostly of good size. The fur is of decent quality for being early in the season-dark brown with a red/blue mottled leather. Numerous scars and bite marks on the larger males indicates that the population density is quite high.</span></p>
<p>More than half the rats came from feed beds and resting areas. The #1 stoploss traps are so valuable in holding and drowning the rats with minimal leg trauma. I would consider these a must for stillwater rat trapping.</p>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;">The #450 SleepyCreek bodygrips have been impressive and consistent. This is the 3rd season of use and <span style="background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%; -moz-background-clip: border; -moz-background-origin: padding; -moz-background-inline-policy: continuous; cursor: pointer;"><span id="lw_1262622121_3">the springs</span></span> are holding their power. Using stabilizers has really minimized empty and knocked over traps. The best set of the week was a bottom edge set along a sub-merged log that has a feedbed on it. The bodygrip and stabilizer are put tight to the lowest edge of the log along the bottom. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;">The bank runs we set only yielded one rat each-a function of low banks and lots of water.</p>
<p></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;">Next we will be setting out a line for mink, muskrat and coon in Muir Creek and on the <span style="border-bottom: 1px dashed #0066cc; background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%; -moz-background-clip: border; -moz-background-origin: padding; -moz-background-inline-policy: continuous; cursor: pointer;"><span id="lw_1262622121_4" style="border-bottom: 1px dashed #0066cc; cursor: pointer;">Trempealeau River</span></span>.</span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Happy Trapping!</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;">Tom Roskos</span></div>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"> </span></p>
<p style="background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%; -moz-background-clip: border; -moz-background-origin: padding; -moz-background-inline-policy: continuous;"><strong><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%; color: #4f6228;">Tom&#8217;s Tip:<br />
</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;">Stoploss traps for muskrat and mink are a great way to provide for rapid drowning and eliminate wring-outs. I don&#8217;t use the metal pin to delay the firing of the auxillary arm since u</span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;">sing the pin shortens the chain making it possible for the animal to avoid getting in drowning depth water</span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;">. Modifying the chain on these traps increases their effectiveness. I like to replace the ring with a box swivel and then add 3 feet of #2 machine chain, with a ring on the far end. Depending on water depth or the width of the waterway the trap can then be staked at the center swivel or at the end ring.  The added weight of the chain also helps drown the animals.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;">My stoploss trap of choice is the <a style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px;" rel="nofollow" href="http://et.ratepoint.com/673c467a3ab957964df1b7d3d249122f/5cb85fe26d71c7c613b0a8a60f98a2ad" target="_blank"><span id="lw_1262622121_5">Sleepy Creek #1 Longspring Guard Trap</span></a>.  Since these traps are key equipment for stillwater rat trapping, I would like to offer a special on these traps.  Place your order for these traps during the month of December and receive an additional 10% off of the purchase price of <a style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px;" rel="nofollow" href="http://et.ratepoint.com/673c467a3ab957964df1b7d3d249122f/5cb85fe26d71c7c613b0a8a60f98a2ad" target="_blank"><span id="lw_1262622121_6">Sleepy Creek #1 Longspring Guard Traps</span></a>.  Enter Coupon Code DECEMBER at Checkout.</span></p>

The scent of fallen leaves, damp earth and the spicy aromas of the backwaters stirs the memories of years of setting traps with <span style="background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%; -moz-background-clip: border; -moz-background-origin: padding; -moz-background-inline-policy: continuous; cursor: pointer;"><span id="lw_1256989184_5">good friends</span></span>. I revel in the thought of sharing this experience with many others this year.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;">We are busily outfitting Belisle 160&#8242;s with <a href="http://www.trapshackcompany.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;cPath=29&amp;products_id=193&amp;zenid=ml1uus4gna5643ljinbr6617o6">Rod Scott&#8217;s wooden coni-pans</a>. I work in the shadows of Sue, the Mink Miss Master, who runs them over with her van.  Bill Schlesser, my trapping partner, is the original Mink Master.  The pocket set baited with <a href="http://www.trapshackcompany.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;cPath=35_51&amp;products_id=192&amp;zenid=ml1uus4gna5643ljinbr6617o6">Greg&#8217;s Great Coon and Mink Bait</a> will help elevate my status this year. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;">Sharing our trapping and coon-hunting experiences with others is our goal. Connect with the natural world while you are there and use all your senses to drink in the entire experience. Be thankful for the animals. Honor them by doing a good job with their furs. What an excellent year to tan some of your own pelts to remind us of the beauty of the furs we seek.</span></div>

<p style="background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%; -moz-background-clip: border; -moz-background-origin: padding; -moz-background-inline-policy: continuous;">We love getting to know our customers and would love to have you join us at one of our 2010 “Trap Shack” open houses in our 1901 barn showroom. <span> </span><span> </span>We had a great time at our first open house in August.<span> </span>Our nephew Tom, cousin Keith, son Greg and assistant Latonia helped make the day a success. <span> </span>Friends of all ages enjoyed baa-ing sheep, spotting duck eggs by Billy-goats’ hut and the chance to pick Pristine apples that were ripe in our orchard. I vaccinated dogs and got the chance to soak up great stories that were shared by our customers.<span> </span>We also demonstrated different ways to set up the Jungwirth Coon Catchers.<span> </span>Cousin Keith set up our huge <span id="lw_1256621049_5">cast iron kettle</span> over a wood fire.<span> </span>He added Pete’s Sleepycreek Liquid Trap Dye to the boiling water.<span> </span>We dyed 4 dozen #110 bodygrips and #1 stoploss for our muskrat and mink line.<span> </span>It provided a dull, black, odorless finish to the traps.</p>
<p>On October 11, we hosted a sp<span style="background-color: #edf1e9;">ecial guest, Uncle Kenny Salwey. Kenny is the star of the BBC’s movie, “<em>Mississippi: Tales of the <span id="lw_1256621049_6">Last River Rat</span>.”</em> He also is author of <em>“The Last River Rat” Kenny Salwey’s Life in the Wild</em> and <em>Kenny Salwey’s Tales of a <span id="lw_1256621049_7">River Rat</span></em>.  These books are available at the showroom and on the website.  His next book, “<em>The Old Time River Rats,</em>” is scheduled to be released in <span id="lw_1256621049_8" style="border-bottom: 1px dashed #0066cc; background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%; cursor: pointer; -moz-background-clip: border; -moz-background-origin: padding; -moz-background-inline-policy: continuous;">November 2009</span>.</span></p>
<p style="background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%; -moz-background-clip: border; -moz-background-origin: padding; -moz-background-inline-policy: continuous;"><span style="background-color: #edf1e9;">Kenny Salwey, The Last River Rat, is a cherished member of our family.  Being Sue’s Uncle they share a French-Canadian heritage, which dates back to the <span id="lw_1256621049_9" style="border-bottom: 1px dashed #0066cc; cursor: pointer;">Voyageurs</span> of the early 1700’s.  <span id="lw_1256621049_10">The Voyageurs</span> had an adventurous, free spirited attitude combined with a love of the land.  This heritage has woven its way through our businesses.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12px;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">We built a fire under the huge, <span>cast iron kettle</span>. Visitors roasted hotdogs and made smores. Families toured the farm and orchard. Many people sipped hot choclate  and consumed Cowboy Kenny Cookies. What a special day to share knowledge and stories in our gathering spots! Thanks for the people and great sales in the Trap Shack.</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;"><br />

<p>Wishing you a great trapping season!</p>

<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Belisle 160</span></strong> &#8211; With the cool foggy nights here in Western Wisconsin, we are gearing up for coon season at the Trap Shack.<span> </span>If you use bodygrips for trail sets or bucket sets consider the Belisle 160’s.<span> </span>These extremely fast well built traps will reduces misses and will hold coon no matter how they are caught – fast, humane dispatch.<span> </span>Use a spring loaded <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Bodygrip Safety</span> to prevent pinched fingers.<span> </span>Just a note – sometimes the dogs on the new 160’s need to be filed for a perfect fit with the trigger.<span> </span></p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Sleep Creek 600 </span></strong>- The <span id="lw_1256783913_13" style="border-bottom: 1px dashed #0066cc; cursor: pointer;">Sleepy Creek</span> 600 is another stong trap in the 6”x6” size.<span> </span>These USA made traps feature heavier steel and longer springs than other traps in this class.<span> </span>We all hope fur prices go back up but as trappers and coon hunters we still have a very important role to play in fur-bearer population management.<span></p>
<p>Our showroom is stocked for the season!  Call us and set up an appointment.  And if you have specific requests, let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you.</span></p>
